POWER UP Media Literacy Workshops Navigating Girl World Societal factors send powerful messages to girls and young women that certain attributes are unacceptable, namely being overweight and unattractive. The clearest message to girls from the media is that being "hot" is a social imperative. Unspoken rules, constant assessment by peers and a bombardment of media advertisements (TV, social media sites, music videos) leave some girls feeling vulnerable, helpless and confused. It doesn't have to be this way! In this workshop, parents, guardians, educators and community members will learn strategies to support girls to think critically about the media and how it influences their body image and self-esteem. By exposing media manipulation, girls can feel a sense of empowerment, confidence and connectedness
Navigating Girl World Part II - Exposing Beauty Myths
Through the use of multi-media, this 8 station, interactive workshop for parent(s)/daughter(s) will help strengthen communication, expose media myths and allow for candid discussion. A great way to talk about important topics in a fun, engaging way. ![]() |
"I attended your Power Up Session at
the Mean Girls Conference with a
co-worker and WE LOVED IT! I totally
wish that we had more than the short
45 minutes! WE LOVED IT! You are a
terrific speaker and I especially LOVED
the hands on aspect of your session in
particular. You had SO MANY useful
tips and ideas and it was exactly the
type of session we needed to establish
our groups." Vanessa Bryce, Grade 4 teacher,
Las Cruces, NM, USA "This year my mom went to re-hab and failed. She relapsed shortly after she came home. Girls' Group has helped me a lot in this hard time. I’ve had the support and encouragement of all the girls. This group has also helped me to make friends and to keep them. I’ve learned to keep my cool in hard situations, and I’ve learned what kind of people I should be around when I need support or when I just need a friend. Without this group, I don’t think I would have made it through the year." Anonymous, Parksville
"Your group, Girls Club, changed everything for **. She learned new skills, she gained confidence and she realized that she was not alone. The talk you gave the other night, "The Hidden Aggression in Girls", gave me new insight as well. Thank you. I truly believe that all parents who have girls entering Middle School should hear this talk. In addition, Girls' Club should be available to all girls". Tammy, Mother of 3,
Parksville "The time flew by! It was interactive, great to get up and move around. You kept us busy." Strong Moms, Strong Girls participant
"I really valued your teaching and authentic sharing." Holly,

"My husband really benefited from your seminar last night and this morning I taught my three year old daughter the difference between her vulva and her vagina." Allyson,
